Texas has not passed a balcony solar law. We looked and found no bill. That is not a flat ban, but it means no shortcut. This guide is as of October 2026. It is not legal advice, so check your utility's page before you buy.
Is balcony solar legal in Texas now?
There is no state law that clears the way. We found no plug-in solar bill in the 2025 sessions, and the Texas Legislature has no regular session in 2026. It meets in odd years, so the next one is in January 2027. We could not prove that no bill exists, so treat this as "we found none." See which states allow balcony solar.
How many watts can I plug in in Texas?
There is no special plug-in limit, because there is no plug-in law. A grid-tied system is judged the way any home solar system is. That usually means going through your utility's connection process. Rules differ by utility, and co-ops and city utilities may have their own. Ask yours.
Do I need to tell my utility in Texas?
If your system can send power back to the grid through an outlet, yes, plan on it. With no plug-in law, the normal route is your utility's connection (interconnection) application. We did not verify the exact rule for each utility. Call yours before you buy anything, and get the answer in writing.
Can my landlord or HOA say no to balcony solar in Texas?
Yes, as far as we know. We found no Texas rule that protects plug-in solar from lease or HOA limits. If you rent, ask in writing. Our renters guide has a checklist. Never hang anything on a railing without permission.
Do I get paid for power I send to the grid in Texas?
That depends on your utility's plan, not on a plug-in law. Many retail plans pay little or nothing for exports. Check your own plan before you count on credits. Our savings guide shows how to work out savings from using the power yourself.
What does a balcony solar kit need in Texas?
No state law sets a plug-in certification. That does not make any kit safe. If you do shop, look for plug-in solar certification such as UL 3700. See kits sold in the US and the UL 3700 guide.
What can I do in Texas today?
Read what balcony solar is. Call your utility about its connection rules. A battery "solar generator" that does not feed the grid is a different thing from a plug-in panel, and may not need a connection, but ask first. Then watch the January 2027 session, when bills can be filed.
The quick version
- We found no Texas plug-in solar bill.
- The legislature meets next in January 2027.
- Today, normal utility connection rules apply.
- Landlord and HOA rules still decide.
