Utah was the first state we found to pass a plug-in solar law. HB 340 passed in 2025 and is already in force. This guide is as of October 2026. It is not legal advice, so check your utility's page before you buy.
Is balcony solar legal in Utah?
Yes. HB 340 took effect on May 7, 2025. It added Utah Code 54-15-601. We found no changes to it in 2026. It lets you use a portable solar device without a utility connection agreement. See which states allow balcony solar to compare other states.
How many watts can I plug in in Utah?
Up to 1,200 watts of maximum output. The device must plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and be movable. It must meet the latest national electrical code. It also needs a feature that stops it from energizing the building's wiring in a power cut. Its job is to cover some of what your home uses.
Do I need to tell my utility in Utah?
No. The law does not require notice. The utility cannot ask for approval, charge a fee or demand extra controls or equipment. The law speaks to the "electrical corporation," which in practice means a state-regulated utility such as Rocky Mountain Power. If a city utility or co-op serves you, call them to check what they expect.
Can my landlord or HOA say no to balcony solar in Utah?
Yes, they still can. HB 340 has no renter, landlord or HOA rules. Your lease and HOA rules still apply. Renters should ask in writing. Our renters guide has a checklist. Never drill or hang gear on a railing without permission.
Do I get paid for power I send to the grid in Utah?
No. Portable solar devices are not part of Utah's net metering program. So there is no credit for extra power. The best use is when your home uses the power as it is made. See our savings guide to estimate what that is worth for you.
What does a balcony solar kit need in Utah?
It must be certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or an equivalent national testing lab. The law does not name a specific UL standard. Look for a plug-in solar certification. Read the label before you buy. See kits sold in the US.
What can I do in Utah today?
If you own your home, you can plug in a certified kit now. First, check your sun and your outlet. Read what balcony solar is. Then compare certified kits. Renters and HOA members should get written permission first. Keep the manual and the certification papers in case anyone asks.
