Plug-in solar became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026. Northern Ireland was left out of the part that matters. Here's what the documents say, what Which? expects, and what you can do in the meantime.
Can I plug in solar panels in Northern Ireland?
No, not legally, not yet. The law is SI 2026/848. Its first two regulations cover the whole UK, including Northern Ireland. They deal with the plug and its safety. But regulation 3, the one that lets you connect a plug-in device to the grid, covers England, Wales and Scotland only. Northern Ireland's connection rules were not changed.
What do the official documents say about Northern Ireland?
Very little. The product specification says its use in Northern Ireland is "subject to further consideration and may require amendment". It says Northern Ireland has its own connection rules, called G98/NI. The government's consultation said any change there would be for the relevant Northern Ireland department. The government's July response only noted that some people asked how the rules would apply. We found no statement from the Department for the Economy, the Utility Regulator or NIE Networks.
Is plug-in solar coming to Northern Ireland?
Which? thinks so, but nobody has promised a date. On 7 October 2026 it said Northern Ireland's safety regulations haven't yet been revised, "but we do expect this to follow soon". In September it told readers in Northern Ireland to wait for updates before buying. We found no date and no consultation. Two websites we saw disagree: one says it is legal in Northern Ireland, one says it isn't. The law and the specification back the second.
Should I buy a plug-in solar kit in Northern Ireland now?
No. Wait. A kit sold for Great Britain can't be legally connected in Northern Ireland today. One maker lists its kit as approved for plug-in connection "only in England, Wales and Scotland". Whether shops may even sell compliant kits in Northern Ireland isn't covered by any official source we found. Kits bought without installation also carry 20% VAT, so there's no tax saving to rush for. See our cost guide.
What can I do about solar in Northern Ireland today?
Use the legal route that exists. Rooftop solar is connected through NIE Networks under G98/NI. Your installer has 30 days from commissioning to send in the paperwork, and the first-stage application is free. Installed solar has also had VAT relief in Northern Ireland since May 2023. That relief is due to end, so read our VAT deadline guide. Our plug-in versus rooftop guide helps you compare.
The quick version
- Plug-in solar is not legal to connect in Northern Ireland yet.
- We found no date and no consultation. Which? expects the rules to follow.
- Don't buy a kit yet. Rooftop solar via NIE Networks is the legal route today.
